I’m a stay-at-home mother, but…
Roberta Siao, chef at our Brazilian pop-up last December, talks about what she has gained from working with Mazí Mas.
As many women nowadays, I had the opportunity to study, have a job and so be independent and proud of it! But then, as many women, I got married, had a baby and decided to stay at home to look after my son. That’s when I realised I had changed category and now belonged to the group of women who work almost non-stop, not paid and – the “cherry on top” – not valued as a full member of society. As time passed, I started to become more defensive when I answered the classic question: What do you DO for a living? I really could see me feeling embarrassed, almost ashamed of it, trying to make it more feasible to them that a mentally and physically able person in their active adult years could possibly spend all these years without earning any money (that is - producing wealth for others). My answer was: I’m a stay-at-home mother, but…
I’ve always loved food and cooking, having memories of a childhood permeated with amazing and funny stories of make believe cooking to proper meals cooked in a improvised brick stove at the backyard of my grandmother’s house, when on holiday.
After many years, I decided to do some voluntary work in a social enterprise called Pie in the Sky Café [a FoodCycle project], where I was very fortunate to meet Niki, this genuine, caring and loving person, who told me about this beautiful project she was starting.
I got involved from the beginning and we organised a Brazilian pop-up night called Reveillon. The night was a success and the participants truly loved it and thought they had a unique night! For me it was an amazing experience and gave me lots of confidence and the old feeling of being valued for who I am and for some of the best things you have to share with people, in my case cooking. I also felt proud to be honouring the traditions of the culture I come from and the women who passed it to me, many in the same situation as I am.

On a practical level, it gave me the kick start to follow my interests, pursue other ideas for future work with food and a few other projects I got involved with like doing cooking demonstrations, assisting other chefs in classes and cooking for events like Female Voices, on the 10th of October at the Red Gallery in Shoreditch. I cannot think of myself being near where I am if it wasn’t for the Mazí Mas project and I really wish many other women have the opportunity to benefit from the same life-changing experience I had, not only because they thoroughly deserve it and we, as society as a whole would benefit even more from the important, if not fundamental contribution they make, but also help to bring us closer together to share delicious food and more than anything: LOVE.
Talking about food, I cannot finish this article without a recipe: a simple but lovely biscuit we would eat with a cup of freshly brewed coffee, sitting at a kitchen table, chatting away…Those unplanned moments where life feels so simple and beautiful as it is…Hope you can share some of these biscuits and moments with others…
Polenta Biscuits / Biscoitinhos de Fuba
Makes 50
Ingredients
125 g polenta flour
60 g 00 flour
1/4 tsp baking powder
pinch of sea salt
150g icing sugar, sifted
100g unsalted butter at room temperature
grated rind of 1 unwaxed lemon/lime
1 tsp fennel seeds (optional)
Instructions
Put polenta, flour, baking powder and salt on a work surface and mix well. Make a mound with a well in the centre and put the sugar, butter and lemon rind into it. Knead it a little just to form a malleable ball.
Divide it in 2 pieces, wrap in cling film and put in the fridge for an hour. Roll out the first dough on a work surface to a 5mm thick. Cut into discs with a cutter or top of a bottle or small jar. Transfer to a baking sheet.
Preheat the oven to 180°C and bake for 5-7 mins, until golden in colour. While one batch is cooking roll out the other half and follow the same instructions. Leave the biscuits to cool before removing from tray. When cold, store in an airtight jar.
